David Watts
About David Watts
Ever since an injury to his soft palate at the age of 5 where doctors were convinced he would never speak properly, if at all for the remainder of his life, David has been fascintated by communication in
all its myriad forms.
David took this passion for communication and combined it with his love of information to start his own mobile disco in the 80's. The venture was very successful, however David felt there was more to be had from this communication, entertainment thing. So the next logical step was in store radio. David began working at the first in store radio station in the country, Radio Pick and pay. During this time in conjunction with his mobile disco work people started to ask him to MC at various functions. This was truly a dream come true considering that little boy who was told he might never speak again. Yet there was still something missing!
David started studying what made people effective communicators and why some people were better at it than others, during this time he came across the technology of NLP, he was hooked. Yet the urge to perform remained. Soon David heard of the possible emergence of independent radio in this country. This was an opportunity not to be missed. David attended the Solid Gold Broadcasting Course and was soon working as a presenter on one of the first independent radio stations in the
country. This quickly led to bigger and better things as David moved on to presenting on 94.7 Highveld Stereo. At that time opportunity once again came calling and David left the bright lights of Johannesburg for the tranquillity of the Mpumalanga Lowveld. Here he took over the running and management of Radio Safari. To date this is still seen as one of the most successful community radio stations this country has seen.
Politics intervened and Radio Safari was closed down by the then IBA. What was someone who made their living with their voice to do? At that time communication skills were at an all time low in the country in general. So David decided it was time to share his knowledge regarding
communication and effective presentation skills. This led to doing work with the following companies Sun International, Tsogo Sun, Telkom Business, EXSA, GCIS and Microsoft.
However before long the radio industry came knocking again, David was instrumental for putting together Mpumalangas first independant commercial radio station MPowerFM. At its inception David was both the programme manager and Afternoon Drive presenter.
David has subsequently relocated to Johannesburg and has most recently been involved in MC'ing the South African Ballroom and Latin American Dace Championships as well as the South African freestyle dance championships. David has also been selected as the voice for
Airports at Cape Town International Airport. David currently does freelance MC work, voice overs, corporate voices as well as various communication based training courses.
