Kyle Watson’s passion for music derived from a really young age, and so, as with all good things that are nurtured, it’s no surprise that today he’s celebrated as one of South Africa’s most popular young DJ’s on the music scene.
This however, is not where Kyle’s talent is limited, he’s also an exceptional producer and has produced a number of he’s own tracks. He has also revamped some well known tracks such as John Dahlback’s “More Than I Wanted” and Goldfish’s “Cruising Through”. Notably, it’s little wonder that Lady Lea named him as one of South Africa’s top, up and coming producers in 2007.

He’s ability to funk tracks up is brilliant and listening to each one makes your body move without hesitation. Kyle made the very big decision earlier this year to venture to new shores and test the waters; he’s currently based in London. It seems though, that no matter where Kyle Watson is, he’s international fan base continues to grow and there is a fantastic hype when he’s about to drop a new track.
You’ve recently moved to the UK, for 2 years at least, what prompted this big move?
I just wanted to experience the clubbing scene in the UK since it’s one of the most forward thinking in the world. It’s given me great insights into dance music and has opened my mind to a lot more than what I was used to in South Africa. I’m actually here for max two years; I plan on coming back to South Africa next year sometime!
How are you finding the crowd’s receptivity to your vibe and mixing in the UK?
The two scenes seem very different, the crowds here are great and like I said, are open to hear new and innovative tracks and mixing techniques. The scene in both countries is wicked though, South Africa is not far behind and the new wave of SA producers is coming up in a big way internationally!
You have a notable collection of tracks to your name already, and you continue to drop the funkiest mixes, what motivates you as you work?
Music in all its forms motivates me to get better with every track and mix, and helps me to try new things and attempt to push the boundaries.
What has been your favorite track to date, that you have either remixed, or produced yourself?
Well, my favourite track to date is probably Lee Mortimer — Moaning and Groaning. It always fit perfectly into my sets and was a sure-fire crowd pleaser. If I had to choose my favourite personally produced track it would have to be my original mix of Doubting You.
Is there anyone in particular you aspire to be like, without losing your individuality of course?
I think it’s good to have artists that you look up to and are inspired by, although I personally can’t think of anyone that I aspire to be like. Maybe small bits from all the people I look up to merged into one!
You continue to make a tremendous impression on the music industry year after year, what would you say is the one most important thing you have learned in this rather progressive field?
Connections! Having a good base of people that you know really helps out when it comes to the dance music industry. I’ve also learnt that producing is a great way to get your name out there.
Which one item do you not leave home without?
For some reason I always leave the house with my cellphone and a tub of lip balm. Peculiar…
What’s your favorite thing to do when you not producing and just chillin’?
Music is a huge part of my life so when I’m relaxing I’m listening to music. Not just house music, I enjoy anything from reggae to glitch, acoustic to drum and bass. It relaxes me and it’s always great to have something playing in the background.
If you could meet anyone in the world who would it be and why?
Hmm, Jesse Rose, because of the fact that he is super talented and I could learn a lot from him. He knows exactly how to make the perfect house track and gets it right every time.
You constantly producing mind blowing tracks that seem to get better each time, what can we expect from Kyle for the rest of 2009 both in production and live events?
Well I’ve been quite busy in the studio working on some re-edits and re-shuffles that I plan on sending out at some point. But release-wise, I’ve got some EP’s on the way, as well as some interesting remixes to keep an eye out for. I’m booked for a few big gigs before the end of the year, including a big Sheffield show where I’ll be playing alongside HiJack, Mightyfools and Liam Vizzle.
