Pimp Squad
About Pimp Squad
Undeniably South Africa’s most popular DJ duo, the Pimp Squad was formed in 2001 when Guy Herman and Jon S, both established DJ’s in their own right, teamed up at Sublime’s first Boiling Point event. Two
DJ’S / Four Turntables / Two DJ Boxes at either end of the dancefloor, and so the legend was born. The duo has been partners in crime ever since, rocking dance floors across the country, playing alongside and
working with some of the biggest names in the industry.
They describe their sound as “a fusion of jackin’ house & crunchy electronic beats” which has become their signature sound. Laced with live samples and explosive mixing, every Pimp Squad performance is memorable. They’ve been at the forefront of the house revolution since the early days of 206 and Reality, holding down countless residencies and radio slots over the years, playing every major event and venue on the SA dance scene. They can presently be found every Saturday at Truth nightclub in Midrand for their weekly residency. Following on the success of their debut compilation “Deeper Sound of Pimp Squad”, the duo recently released their second compilation, “Road Trip 2007” through USM Records. “The new album is in true Pimp Squad style, predictably unpredictable. We believe in the potential of a dynamic sound and have looked to bring this to the fore in our new album. It is a collection of tracks that are exclusively Pimp Squad, an underground sound that is unique in a market dominated by the mainstream.” Music Industry Online Interview Since the formation of their own record label Pimp Squad Recordings, the pair have been busy in studio adding to their already impressive discography, with tracks released both locally and internationally on labels such as Grooved Music, Downsouth Music, Junky Trunk, Funkfield Recordings, Second Session, Flexual Records, Elevate Music, Buzz Cut Recordings, USM Records and forthcoming on Roostar Records and Electric Sushi.
Their production credits can be found on compilations such as Lady Lea’s Catch Me If You Can Vol. 1, Partyhouse Vol. 1, Truth Vol. 5, Natural Groove Vol. 1, Full Throttle and of course their most recent Pimp Squad album release, Road Trip 2007.
