Truly representative of what was happening on the DJ, comedy and live music scene over the years 88 has hosted such diverse names and artists like Hugh Masekela, DJ Fresh, The Parlotones, Shaun Duvet, 340ml, Goldfish, Roger Goode, Prime Circle, Arno Carstens, Cokey Falkow, Sweat X, Kagiso Lediga, Louise Carver, The Dirty Skirts, Chris Forrest, Desmond & The Tutus, DJ Bob, Joey Rasdien, Chris Chameleon, The Blunted Stuntman, The Milk Bar Kid, John Vlismas, Ed Jordan, Lebo Mashile, Kid Fonque, Ryan Dent, Flash Republic, Jim Neversink, Harris Tweed, Albert Frost, Karen Zoid, Ricky H and Household Funk the list is literally endless and the gigs were truly memorable.
From an international perspective, 88 hosted acts like Jose Gonzalez, Eagle Eye Cherry, Evan Dando, DJ Krush, Missy Higgens and Richard Dorfmeister.
As a breaking ground for emerging talent, 88 was always at the forefront of booking and developing new acts in Johannesburg bear in mind a lot of the names mentioned above were just starting out, when they got on the 88 stage.
But the true testament to 88’s impact is that most of the musicians, DJs and comedians on that list also chose to hang out at 88 along with all the other freaks, fashionistas, models, pimps, writers, photographers, artists, hustlers, actors, hoodlums and sinners who go looking for the heart of Saturday night.
After 6 crazy, beautiful years, the time has come to bring the curtain down on 88.
